Introduction

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München is a leading research university in Europe. Since its founding in 1472, It has been committed to the highest international standards of excellence in research and teaching.The historic Main Building, an urban landmark since 1840, now predominantly houses the humanities, economics, and social science departments, such as the Faculties of Catholic and Protestant Theology, Law, and Economics or the Munich School of Management. The best known of the lecture halls are the Great Aula where the Bavarian State Parliament was reconvened in 1946, and the Audimax, which seats 800.

Situated at the heart of the city, this campus is surrounded by various options for dining, shopping, accommodation as well as access to public transport.

Transport

LMU’s main campus, located right in the heart of Munich, is an integral part of the lively city and is easily accessible by public transport — or by bicycle. Find out more here.

Arriving by plane

The Munich International Airport (MUC) is connected to the city center by the train line S1 and S8. Depending on the subway line you want to switch to, the connection may differ: 

For U1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8: Exit train at Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof).

For U3 and U6: Exit train at Marienplatz.

Arriving by train

Most trains arrive at Munich Central Station (München Hauptbahnhof) since it is a terminus station. From there, almost all train and subway lines as well as several bus and tram lines can be reached. Occasionally, trains end at Pasing Bahnhof which is connected to the city center by all S-Bahn lines.

Libraries
  • The University‘s library is situated next to the Main Building. Its collection comprises 5 million volumes that are stored in the Central Repository and 15 other depots. This also includes the state-of-the-art Philologicum, which opened in 2019: As LMU‘s largest specialist library, it houses the holdings of the departments of Classical Philology, German, Romance and Slavic Studies as well as the philology-related holdings of the Central Textbook Collection.
