Introduction

Comprising three campuses spread across the city, the U.Porto is a space of unique size and richness within the framework of Higher Education in Portugal.

Either in historical buildings downtown or modern buildings in the periphery, the U.Porto’s 14 faculties are as diverse in location as in their field of work. Only at the U.Porto can you study Medicine or Law in century-old buildings, complete a Fine Arts course in a "garden-museum" in the city centre, or learn Engineering in one of the most modern buildings in the Portuguese Higher Education System.

Despite being geographically distributed, the University’s departments function as a whole and regularly collaborate in joint training and research projects. This team effort, which involves the faculties and dozens of research units all over the University, is fundamental for the production and dissemination of knowledge and added social value.

The U.Porto is currently expanding and modernising its infrastructures with a view of increasing the quality and quantity of our equipment. This renewal process includes the faculties, research centres, libraries, auditoriums, museums, halls of residence, sports venues and social venues, as well as other equipment that respond to the specific demands of the academic community.

Let’s take a ride!

History

The University of Porto was officially founded in 1911. Its first faculties composed of Science and Medicine. The University of Porto is rich in history, with the website providing more information about historical buildings and figures. More of its history can be found here.

Highlights

Studying at U.Porto is something most young Portuguese and an increasing number of people from abroad wish to do every year. Well aware of our responsibility, we see our students’ well-being as our key priority, from the moment they enrol to the moment they receive their degrees.

Apart from all the support tools for studying, U.Porto offers the academic community 11 halls of residence, over 20 eating facilities, free social and medical services and other facilities and services for daily needs. Students can also use the modern sports amenities that only an institution that has led the way in university sports in Portugal for several years can offer.

U.Porto is also an inclusive university. Students with special needs, students struggling with financial difficulties (for whom the University sets aside thousands of scholarships each year) and students coming in from all around the world are all given special attention. With the U.Porto Card, our students can access facilities and services and exclusive advantages in and outside the campus.

However, the essence of “being U.Porto”  transcends the boundaries of our classrooms, libraries and labs. It includes privileged access to a wide range of extracurricular activities, on and off campus, in a city that never sleeps. Being part of a tuna (academic musical group), volunteering, being involved in student associations or taking part in cultural activities promoted or co-organised by U.Porto… the most challenging  thing will be choosing!
