Introduction

With almost 50,000 students and 5,000 employees, the University of Novi Sad is one of the largest educational and research centres in Central Europe. The University encompasses 14 faculties and 3 research institutes, located in four historical cities of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina – Novi Sad, Sombor, Subotica and Zrenjanin, in the north of the Republic of Serbia. The headquarters of the University and most of the faculties are in Novi Sad, which is the second largest city in Serbia and the administrative seat of Vojvodina Province.

One of the most recognisable features of the University of Novi Sad is the central university campus, located in the city of Novi Sad, on the left bank of the Danube and near the city centre. The Danube quay, a popular destination for enjoyable walks, jogging and relaxation, borders with the University Park, and offers a view of the famous 18th-century Petrovaradin Fortress situated across the river. 

 

History

With its origins dating back to 1740, The University of Novi Sad was developed in 1960 from previously founded faculties. More of its history can be found here 

Highlights

One of the largest educational and research centres in Central Europe and the second largest university in the Republic of Serbia – located in Novi Sad, the city of education and science, the European Youth Capital 2019 and the European Capital of Culture 2022.

Also named the Student City, the University Campus covers an area of almost 260,000 square metres, representing a unique architectural and urban space in Novi Sad, harmoniously integrated into the life and activities of the city. In addition to a number of faculties and institutes, the University campus also hosts student dormitories and student restaurants, the Assistants Building for accommodation of young teaching and research staff, and the Institute for Student Health Care, as well as sport fields and other facilities.

 

Services and Facilities

Transport

The nearest airport to Novi Sad is the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (around 90 km distance). In order to reach Novi Sad from the Airport the passengers need to travel to Belgrade City first and then take a bus or a train to Novi Sad. The travel options by train or bus from the Airport to Belgrade City and from Belgrade to Novi Sad are availableat www.polazak.com, the Belgrade Bus Station, the Serbian Railways, and the Novi Sad public city transport company. The fastest, but also very affordable option is to travel by a speed train Soko, which takes around 35 minutes from Belgrade to Novi Sad. There is also the possibility to take a taxi from the Airport to Novi Sad (it is advisable to make reservations of the taxi transport and check the price beforehand).

Once in Novi Sad, passengers can take a local bus no. 4 from the main bus/train station to the University Campus. This bus lines also goes through the Novi Sad City Centre. The city is very well connected through a local public bus transport system.

The campus surrounding, as well as the city centre, offer a range of affordable and pleasant restaurants and cafés, with very nice local food and beverages. One of the largest shopping centres in the city (Promenada) is also very close to the University campus (5-10-minute walk). 

Services

One of the new facilities on campus is the University Central Building, officially opened in 2013, which houses the University Rectorate, as well as the central university services, offices and centres. On the opposite side of the Campus lies one of the most prominent buildings on Campus – the Science and Technology Park, opened in 2020, intended to support some of the activities of the Faculty of Technical Sciences, as well as housing start-up companies and R&D centres of large companies, at one place. The youngest facility on campus is the building of the BioSense Institute, a state-of-the-art architectural and technical venue, opened in 2023. It was built for further development of this European Centre of Scientific Excellence, with features such as an anti-vibration core that floats on four cushions, which enables the most sensitive scientific research in the field of micro and nano technologies.

 

 

 

 

The Campuses at The University of Novi Sad

The following faculties are located within the Campus: Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Technical Sciences, Faculty of Technology, Faculty of Sport and Physical Education, and the Novi Sad Branch of the Faculty of Economics in Subotica. The Faculty of Medicine and the Academy of Arts are also located in Novi Sad, though outside the campus, the former being located beside the University Clinical Centre of Vojvodina, and the latter in the city centre and at the Fortress.

Libraries

The University of Novi Sad has a well-developed research infrastructure and great potential for innovation. The Central Library and the Faculty and Institute libraries, with the overall library fund of more than 1.7 million units, offer a rich array of publications that cover all relevant scientific areas and enable access to large electronic databases. Resulting from a special agreement on cooperation, researchers, professors and students have access to the Matica Srpska Library, the oldest Serbian scientific and cultural institution, founded in 1826 and located in the city centre, which offers more than three million publications. The University encompasses around 250 laboratories.

Accomodation

Due to very limited accommodation capacities of the student dormitories in the Campus (reserved for domestic students), guests arriving to the University of Novi Sad can book their accommodation in nearby hotels or rent an apartment near the campus. The advisable accommodation options are also hotels, small/boutique hotels or apartments in the city centre or a wider centre region, since the campus is 10-15 minute walk away from the city centre. The available accommodation capacities can be explored through online booking services, such as booking.com or Airbnb.

Culture, Arts, Sciences, and Society

The University of Novi Sad has a variety of resources available to students including; The Centre for Serbian as a Foreign Language, The Confucius Institute of the University of Novi Sad and The Centre for Languages. The main square on campus with a central fountain, trees and other greenery welcomes all guests and offers a relaxing outdoor surrounding for a break between lectures or after work.

Catering

The Students' Centre Novi Sad provides meals for students in three retaurants and six canteens. Students must be in possession of a student card to avail of the service. More information on the different canteen services across campus can be found here
