UiT The Arctic University of Norway is the largest educational institution and a major employer in Northern Norway, with around 16,000 students, 4,000 employees, and about 100 PhD graduates each year.

In this Business Talk, we'll provide a brief introduction to a multi-campus university operating in the Arctic.

We will discuss how we can equip students with essential skills, especially for those whose career plans are to stay in academia.

This is part of our strategy for lifelong learning.

The Norwegian universities are given three main tasks by the government: education, research, and communication. We develop courses to enhance competencies for both those leaving the university and those choosing to work within.

In this context, UiT acts as a career facilitator, presenting itself as an employer for highly educated individuals.

We will first give a brief overview of Tromsø and UiT's main campus, which is located in the town.

Then we'll focus on how we can translate academic skills into workplace abilities, particularly in academia.

Teaching and Education

UiT offers courses in developing advanced pedagogical skills. This initiative is led by the RESULT unit.

One career path can involve becoming a researcher, such as pursuing a PhD degree or advancing from a PhD position into a research program.

An example is the Global Health and Environment research group, at UiT's Department of Community Medicine.

Staff and collaboration teams who are part of this research program face several work challenges and must relate to international perspectives, something we will address in our course.

If you have questions about our course, you can contact representatives from RESULT and Global and Environmental Health.

Feel free to send any questions in advance to the contact person listed above.

Programme:

  • Brief welcome and introduction from UiT
  • Get to know The Arctic University of Norway
  • Presentation by RESULT on teaching and education skills
  • Presentation of medical research at UiT: An example of research careers; the global and environment health programme
