As we can currently observe, in our globalised world, health can no longer be viewed only in terms of the human being. Instead, a holistic approach and interdisciplinary cooperation including environmental and social sciences as well as veterinary medicine is needed to address current health problems like the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. During the 1st EUGLOH Innovation days we will look for innovative solutions for such One Health challenges.

Report
At the 25-27th of June 2020, the 1st EUGLOH Innovation Days were successfully implemented at LMU Munich. Within this framework, Center for International Health of the LMU (CIHLMU) has organised the 1st EUGLOH Innovation Days on One Health Challenges, which were open to PhD students and researchers of all EUGLOH partner universities. The aim was to develop and prototype innovative ideas to tackle current One Health challenges, with a focus on the current COVID-19 pandemic.
During the 2 days (from Monday afternoon to Wednesday lunchtime), 20 researchers and PhD students from all EUGLOH universities were actively engaged in finding innovative solutions or already have a concrete idea of how to tackle One Health problems in the world. They came from all continents and different disciplines, not only from human and veterinary medicine, but also natural sciences such as biology, geography and mathematics, but also social and legal sciences, psychology or communication sciences, computer science and engineering.
After short theoretical inputs from the main lecturer Sebastian Planck, head of Qualification at the Social Entrepreneurship Akademie, on the whole innovation process from User Exploration to Prototyping, the multidisciplinary and international teams applied what they had learned directly in their own project. In this practical and interactive way, they practiced skills like ideation, pitching and mock-up construction as well as other methods and tools from the field of entrepreneurship. In the end, had five teams presented a product in the final pitch. The winning teams were selected by a five-member jury, with representatives from all partner universities who are experts in the field of health or innovation.
First place went to a team that had developed a game with the aim to improve the mental well-being of adolescents, in an engaging, fun, innovative and sustainable manner. The team will be supported for half a year within the program SEA:incubate in order to further develop and elaborate the innovation.
In summary, the 1st EUGLOH Innovation Days were very successful as one of the first EUGLOH training events. Even though the workshop took place virtually instead of face-to-face as planned, it was very interactive and innovative event. The participants were very motivated and participated with great enthusiasm. Their informal feedback and satisfaction surveys showed that they particularly enjoyed the multidisciplinary and international experience. We are therefore confident about the next activities of EUGLOH, which focuses precisely on these elements in its approach to training the new generation of global health experts.
