Which are the EU values and why are they important?

The European Union is founded on a set of values, which are: human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, rule of law, and human rights, as laid out in the article 2 of the Lisbon Treaty and the EU Charter of Fundamental rights. But what does it mean to have a common set of values across so many different countries? Do we all interpret these the same way? Are there any existing disagreements concerning the values? These are some of the things we will discuss in this year’s first e-conference on the topic: Which are the European values and why are they Important?
