BUILDING EUROPE’S CAMPUS FOR GLOBAL HEALTH

Resilience and Disaster Preparedness

The Focus Area Resilience and Disaster Preparedness investigates the links between a wide range of crises and health, with particular emphasis on resilience as a means to protect health and well-being before, during, and after disruptive events. It examines how individuals, communities, healthcare systems, and societies can build resilience in response to both acute and long-term global health threats. It covers diverse types of crises – including pandemics, geopolitical conflicts, economic instability, forced displacement, and climate-related disasters – and explores their relation with human, animal, and plant health, as well as with society and political systems. Considering varied geographical and socio-political contexts, this area addresses critical aspects of disaster preparedness, including healthcare system capacities, community readiness, crisis communication, and international governance mechanisms. It focuses on the tangible health impacts of crises and the strategies needed to prevent, respond to, and recover from them.

This Focus Area spans both fundamental and applied research and education on physical and mental health related to crises, on contextual settings such as geography, governance and politics, culture, communication, as well as technology. It supports the development of innovative strategies for response, treatment, monitoring, and surveillance, and promotes capacity building for crisis resilience. This Focus Area draws on and expands the pandemic-related expertise developed through the EUGLOHRIA project.
