KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALCALÁ

The University of Alcalá is an innovative public university with a clear commitment to socialise science, technology and innovation. The University also runs several general outreach events connecting our mission to the surrounding communities. It also promotes and manages research and knowledge transfer in such a way that the generation and dissemination of new knowledge is compatible with its protection and, if applicable, with its transfer to the productive fabric. Under the open science model, those activities aimed at generating new knowledge are promoted and managed. Under an open innovation model, transfer activities are promoted to value knowledge and make it possible for it to reach the end user and society in general.

Structure and Support Mechanisms

Research valorisation: The Technology Transfer Office (OTRI in its Spanish acronym) at the University of Alcalá is responsible for managing the university's research results, with the aim of transferring them to society. This includes the management of the University's industrial property, from the patent application to the promotion and collection of funding to enhance these results, and the transfer of research results through licensing.

Alcalá spin-out companies: The University of Alcalá encourages the entrepreneurial spirit among the research community and offers services to promote and to achieve the creation and growth of companies. If researchers and have an innovative idea that, supported by the results of their research, can become a product and/or a service, the OTRI and the Alcalá Research Park support them to start an entrepreneurial project.

There are three types of spin-out companies:

1. Technology-based company | Empresa de base tecnológica (EBT): Companies based on technology or scientific knowledge promoted by the University of Alcalá, with direct or indirect participation of the University in the share capital, and open to the participation in the capital to the research staff of Alcalá. The EBTs aim to exploit the research results of the University of Alcalá linked to technological or scientific knowledge.

2. Company arising from the University of Alcalá research (spin-off): a new company that aims at exploiting research results of Alcalá, promoted and participated in by its researchers within the limits established by the legislation, but without the participation of the University of Alcalá in the share capital.

3. Company emerging of the University of Alcalá (start-up): a new company with a high capacity for innovation created and owned by University of Alcalá research staff or by any person linked to the Alcalá at least the previous five years before the establishment of the company, and without its purpose being the exploitation of research results of the University of Alcalá.

Alcalá Research Chairs: Research Chairs are the fruit of the University's relationships with leading companies and foundations and pursue advanced research in specific business. These Chairs have become a useful tool set up to create and formalise lasting collaborative partnerships with companies and industry.

Science Portal: The newly launched Science Portal (Portal Científico, in Spanish) aims at allowing the consultation of the research carried out at the University of Alcalá. It facilitates the location of experts in all branches of knowledge, their groups, departments or university institutes, as well as access to scientific publications, theses or patents, among others.

Facilities and Resources

The University of Alcalá hosts several facilities fostering innovation, the management and direction of which is attributed centrally to the Oficina de Transferencia de los resultados de la investigación (OTRI for short), indicated above. At the University's organic and functional level, the OTRI is led by the Office of the Vice-president for Research and Knowledge Transfer.

Partnerships and Collaboration Models

Co-creation and collaboration are part of the University of Alcalá's core understandings of KT. The university engages with industry and society in a range of models, most notoriously through Research Chairs, which are the fruit of the university's relationships with leading companies and foundations and pursue advanced research in specific businesses. These Chairs have become a useful tool set up to create and formalise lasting collaborative partnerships with companies and industry.
