BUILDING EUROPE’S CAMPUS FOR GLOBAL HEALTH

UiT-The Arctic University of Norway

UiT The Arctic University of Norway Campus

UiT-The Arctic University of Norway is the northern most university in the world.

Its location on the edge of the Arctic comes with a mission. Our vision is to be a driving force for developing the High North. The Northern Sami notion eallju, which means “eagerness to work”, sets the tone for this motivation at UiT.

Along with students, staff and the wider community, we aim to utilise our location in Northern Norway and Sápmi, our broad and diverse research and study portfolio and interdisciplinary advantage to shape the future of our region.

UiT has, for over 50 years, contributed to finding sustainable solutions for a diverse society living under demanding conditions. But there is also a global dimension to our mission. Climate change, the exploitation of Arctic resources and environmental threats are topics of great public concern. This is also reflected in the research in which UiT invests and in our education programmes.

UiT's key research focuses on the polar environment, climate research, indigenous people, peace and conflict transformation, telemedicine, artificial intelligence, medical biology, space physics, fishery science, marine bioprospecting, linguistics and computational chemistry.

UiT The Arctic University of Norway Students

17,000 students and 4,000 staff study and work at UiT-The Arctic University of Norway.

Our teaching is research-based. In addition to focusing on subjects that are of relevance specifically for the Arctic, UiT´s eight faculties offer a broad range of study programmes, at the bachelor’s, master’s and PhD levels.

UiT's study portfolio therefore covers all classical subject areas from Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Education and Humanities, Science and Technology to Economics, Law, Social Work, Tourism, Sports and Fine Arts.

An international hub

The academic community in Tromsø is highly international. More than 20% of the academic staff and 10% of the student body are from abroad. The University offers more than 20 English taught master’s degree programmes, and all faculties offer English taught courses at both bachelor’s and master’s levels.

UiT-The Arctic University of Norway is a founding member of the University of the Arctic (UArctic). This is an international network of 160 study and research institutions of the circumpolar region. But the University cooperates with all parts of the world. 200 international agreements secure an active academic exchange of students and staff with partner institutions worldwide.

Short history of UiT

The University of Tromsø has gradually expanded through three mergers. In 2009, UiT merged with the University College of Tromsø, and in 2013 with the University College of Finnmark. The latest merge was in 2016, with both the University College of Harstad and the University College of Narvik.

After this last merge, UiT has become a multi-campus university spread throughout Northern Norway. The main campuses are located in Tromsø, Alta, Narvik and Harstad, with smaller departments in the towns of Mo i Rana, Hammerfest and Kirkenes. Due to this merger, the number of students and study programmes has significantly increased. The new university has become an even more important driving force for Northern Norway and international cooperation in the High North.
