The right to the highest attainable standard of health is a central principle in global health policy and practice. In this course the students will explore the intersections between human rights and global health though historical perspectives, current concerns, and practical examples from research and practice.
How can a global health program apply a right based approach? Is health a necessity for the enjoyment of human rights? These are some of the questions that you will have the opportunity to explore through web-based lectures, seminars and self-studies in the course.
The course welcomes students from different disciplines who would like to learn more about human rights, or who are interested in global health inequities. Human rights are a cornerstone of global health and the 'right to health' has become a central concept in international policy and practice in global health. The rights-based approach to global health occurs at the intersection of international law and public health, but also includes elements of ethics, philosophy, social medicine and sustainable development.
The course consists of online lectures, webinars and group discussions. The students are assessed by written exams, oral presentations, and hand-ins. The active participation in seminars in mandatory. The course is examined through two components:
- The course portfolio consists of tests with multiple-choice questions, which mainly assess knowledge and understanding, as well as seminars. The seminars assess the student's ability to discuss current global public health challenges and to act based on a professional approach in the discussions.
- The individual written assignment mainly assesses competence and skills.
Requirements
- Selection strategy: A bachelor degree in any subject is a prerequisite. A statement of purpose must be handed in.
- Certificate/ECTS: 3 ECTS.
