This course aims to provide faculty members with a comprehensive understanding of Service-Learning (SL) as a transformative educational approach, equipping participants with the tools to design impactful interdisciplinary projects within higher education context.

The course will help participants understand the fundamentals of SL, as well as its main challenges and benefits. Learning will be reinforced through hands-on activities, while participants will reflect on their progress through a personal learning log.

To highlight the cross-disciplinary nature of SL, the programme includes talks and round-table discussions featuring instructors, students, and third-sector organisations who will share experiences from different academic fields.

Prerequisites: 

  • B2/C1 level of English proficiency
  • Faculty staff with one semester of teaching experience (at least)

The online component will include 15 hours of training in October and the in-person part will take place at the University of Alcalá in November during 5 days (30 hours in total). 

Content and Methodology

Throughout the course, participants will learn how to plan and develop their own SL proposal while addressing key ethical, collaborative, and sustainability considerations.

Participants will also work collaboratively to design a joint SL project proposal, which they will refine and present during the final stage of the course.

The programme will be taught in English; therefore, a high level of language proficiency (B2/C1) is required.

This activity has been co-created together with Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the University of Porto.
