Ace's Event Experience: "we’re not just participants but a community striving for the same goals"

During the European Universities Week online event, which took place yesterday, Ace Pagkaliwangan — LSB Member, EUGLOH Student Vice-President for Communications, and BSc Physiotherapy student at the University of Szeged — was one of seven students who presented and shared their EUGLOH experiences. Ace shares her experience below.

Ace's Story:

As a Local Student Board Member and Student VP for Communications at EUGLOH, I’ve had the honour of bridging student perspectives with the alliance’s visionary goals. My role is more than a title, it’s a commitment to ensuring that students remain at the heart of this transformative European initiative.

In the past year, I’ve participated in both in-person and virtual EUGLOH events. Last autumn, I attended the Campus Life (WP5) meeting at Paris-Saclay University, where we discussed student well-being initiatives. This June, I’ll join the follow-up session in Munich to continue this work. One highlight was moderating a Student Board roundtable at last year’s Annual Summit in Szeged, where students shared success stories from mobility programs and joint courses. Additionally, in April 2025, I organized COMMSLAB, a virtual workshop via Zoom, where I taught and shared with our peers from partner universities how to create engaging communication materials using accessible tools and strategies.

At the Annual Summit 2024 roundtable, students from different universities exchanged achievements, like participating in cross-border research or attending mobility courses. The energy in the hall was great, it felt like we were celebrating not just individual wins, but the collective strength of EUGLOH. The COMMSLAB workshop, meanwhile, focused on unifying our communication efforts. We shared tips on designing social media posts, writing posts, and storytelling to ensure EUGLOH’s opportunities reach every student.

My favorite memory was during the Annual Summit 2024 roundtable talk when a student from Porto shared how a EUGLOH course helped him to meet people and learn alternative skills. It was a reminder that our work changes lives. Moments like this deepened my connection to peers across borders; we’re not just “participants” but a community striving for the same goals. Collaborating with staff and researchers has also humbled me. At the Paris-Saclay meeting, I learned how much effort goes into creating inclusive policies, which made me appreciate the staff’s behind-the-scenes dedication.

Participating in these activities pushed me to grow as a leader. For example, during COMMSLAB, we were able to discuss how to engage our student-audiences better through creativity. These interactions taught me that leadership means listening as much as guiding.

Most importantly, EUGLOH has shown me that youth voices matter. Whether debating policy with staff or brainstorming campaigns with students from different alliance universities, I’ve felt valued and heard. This isn’t just a network, it’s a movement, and I’m honored to serve as its advocate.
