EUGLOH Calls for Long-Term EU Support to Strengthen Strategic Role of European University Alliances
EUGLOH stresses that European University Alliances are no conventional project – and should therefore not be treated as such – but rather structural platforms for long-term European integration. While EUGLOH welcomes recent strategic initiatives from the European Commission, the Alliance highlights the need for long-term, holistic funding that finally integrates both research and education – and not a reallocation of the resources essential to scientific excellence.
“This statement is just the beginning”, says EUGLOH’s Secretary-General Emily Helmeid. “We hope it will resonate with similar calls from other alliances, especially concerning the fundamental needs and strengths of the EUA initiative.” Helmeid emphasises what EUGLOH has to offer, “Our broader impact, particularly in external partnerships across Europe and globally, stands out. We are committed to ensuring that the benefits of our alliance, especially its research excellence, are shared with others.”

In a broader context, this statement aligns with the overall vision for furthering European scientific integration and collaboration outlined in the “Choose Europe for Science” initiative, while calling for a stable funding architecture and political backing to match the scale of the EU’s strategic goals.
Both then and during her recent visit to Université Paris-Saclay, the European Commission Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu reiterated her commitment to support European University Alliances, emphasizing their role as leaders to ensure no university is left behind.
