Further Embedding R&I in EUGLOH

On the basis of a solid foundation already established in EUGLOH – and the success of the completed EUGLOHRIA project – research and innovation are being further embedded into the Alliance’s work and external relations.

Education and research are deeply intertwined. For this reason, further embedding the research and innovation (R&I) dimension into the EUGLOH Alliance – while building upon the success of the completed EUGLOHRIA project and fundamental tools already having been established within EUGLOH such as the multidisciplinary toolkit – is a focus of the Alliance at the start of the new year. Today marked the first meeting of a new task force in the EUGLOH Alliance dedicated to the R&I dimension.

A significant part of the strategy of the task force will be to continue the work of EUGLOHRIA. The success of the EUGLOHRIA project has already been demonstrated in the form of an evaluation of the seed funding initiative that was carried out last year. EUGLOHRIA’s seed funding incentivized collaboration and not only contributed to stimulating projects – but also to maintaining them. As outlined in the survey results, the grants had the following objectives: planning of cooperative research projects, conducting workshops and research visits to develop cooperative projects, generating preliminary results, preparing proposals for external funding and research applications. A second call also had the aim of fostering collaboration around research infrastructures and platforms.

The seed funding grants supported a total of 21 projects with an overall funding amount of EUR 180,000. Fifteen of these were pilot projects focusing on the shared use of research infrastructures and platforms. According to the survey results, the majority of the funded projects were initiated as a result of the seed funding. The EUGLOHRIA network enabled researchers to find collaborators and have cross-access to research infrastructures.

The success of the EUGLOHRIA seed funding resulted in ten conference presentations, ten scientific articles and, importantly, fourteen joint funding applications. This forward momentum is indicative of the sustainable nature of the collaborative research and innovation taking place within the Alliance. The EUGLOHRIA seed funding programme stimulated projects that are expected to continue. Current EUGLOH initiatives such as the establishment of an R&I task force that will embark on the experiences of EUGLOHRIA, and the ongoing work of the research managers network seeking to support researchers, aim to carry this momentum into the future of the Alliance.
