Marine Biodiversity and Sustainability: Connecting Science and Conservation

In the IMAPP project, which I coordinate, we support global efforts to designate marine protected areas (MPAs) in international waters, particularly in the Atlantic. We map ecologically and biologically significant areas (EBSAs) and assess their ecological functionality under climate change and human pressures. This work contributes to the UN 30x30 goal and the BBNJ process.
In NIKOFIN, we focus on North Sea fish communities, especially on species beyond commercial interest, using innovative monitoring like eDNA, imaging, and telemetry. HABBAL-2, in collaboration with the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, investigates harmful algal blooms in the Baltic Sea and their ecological and societal impacts.
A key challenge in this work is finding ways to balance biodiversity protection with economic interests, especially for stakeholders such as small-scale fisheries in developing countries. Yet, our findings show that science-based prioritization can create win-win solutions, enabling the sustainable use of marine resources.
Our initiatives thrive on transdisciplinary collaboration. Working with people from different countries, cultures, and disciplines is both essential and deeply enriching. It strengthens the science-policy interface and supports evidence-based decisions on ocean use and protection.
I believe this kind of research can inspire others in the EUGLOH network: by aligning sustainability strategies with societal and economic benefits, we can move from abstract goals to real-world impact.
Prof. Dr. Flemming Dahlke is a marine ecologist and junior professor at the University of Hamburg, Institute of Marine Ecosystems- and Fisheries Science, where he leads the working group “Ecology of Marine Organisms.” His research focuses on marine biodiversity, sustainability, and science-based conservation strategies for the ocean.
