Building on Success

The University of Porto steps into this role following EUGLOH’s successful year under the presidency of UiT – The Arctic University of Norway. During a virtual meeting of the EUGLOH Governing Board, Rector Dag Rune Olsen formally handed over the presidency, reflecting on a term characterised by significant advancements in the Alliance, especially when it comes to its external relations, the inclusiveness of its offerings and the collective decision-making of its members. As Rector Sousa Pereira remarked, “Allow me to begin by extending our heartfelt gratitude and sincere congratulations to UiT and its leadership. The Alliance has flourished, demonstrating a remarkable capacity for diplomacy, inclusion, and consensus-building.”

Strategic Vision for 2025

Under the leadership of Rector Sousa Pereira, the University of Porto has outlined a clear and ambitious vision for its presidency, focusing on three core priorities: student-centred cooperation, innovation and external engagement, and academic and research synergies. “Together, we ensure that EUGLOH initiatives resonate with students’ aspirations and needs, promoting a culture of true co-creation and close communication,” noted Sousa Pereira. The university also intends to strengthen EUGLOH’s alignment with the Bologna Process and ensure wide participation across all partner institutions.

Tackling Challenges

As the University of Porto assumes the presidency, Rector Sousa Pereira acknowledged some of the inherent challenges faced by the Alliance. “We have very different educational systems within our Alliance, which can be a problem for us. However, with discussions and cooperation, we can advance,” he remarked. “We can have different geometries in the design of programmes to make them easier to apply for and open to more participants over time,” he added.

A Year of Growth and Transformation

Looking ahead, the University of Porto is committed to maintaining the momentum established by UiT while bringing its unique perspective to the Alliance. “Let us make 2025 a year of growth, innovation, and shared success for EUGLOH,” Sousa Pereira concluded.

This new presidency symbolises not only the continuation of EUGLOH’s legacy but also its evolution as a dynamic, forward-looking Alliance poised to tackle global health challenges and strengthen European collaboration.
