On 4th and 5th April, the University of Alcalá hosted the 4th Hackathon for Social and Environmental Entrepreneurship, organised by its School of Entrepreneurship. Over two days and 15 hours of teamwork, 40 students worked in six groups to come up with creative solutions to real challenges—social, environmental, and economic—presented by local businesses, institutions, and organisations.
The goal? To make a real impact and show that fresh ideas can come from anyone, especially students.
Smart Ideas for a Cleaner Campus
Pharmaceutical company Synerlab Alcalá Farma asked students to find a way to reduce waste. One group proposed “smart” recycling bins that reward users with points when they recycle, along with an interactive campus blackboard where students can report areas that need cleaning.
Helping Trades Survive
The Federation of Cooperatives (FECOMA) raised a concern about how to keep small trades like carpentry and farming alive as older workers retire. The students suggested stronger connections between these businesses and vocational schools, as well as internship programmes to attract younger generations.
Fighting Loneliness with Tech
The City Council of Alcalá challenged students to find a way to reduce unwanted loneliness—a common but often hidden issue. One group came up with a mobile app that connects users to local support services, events, and community resources, all in one place.
A Brighter Future for Palabek
The challenge from Metalúrgica Madrileña focused on Palabek, an African town facing the effects of war and climate change. Students proposed the design of a solar-powered energy system to support farming and provide stable access to water and electricity.
Throughout the event, participants received guidance from mentors, attended short training sessions on teamwork and pitching, and gained experience in solving problems under pressure. Events like this show that universities can be more than just places to study—they can also be spaces for real innovation and change.
