The University of Alcalá hosts the 5th EUGLOH Annual Student Research Conference

EUGLOH PhD students gathered from 17 to 19 December to share their groundbreaking research.

From 17 to 19 December, 2024, the University of Alcalá welcomed approximately 78 PhD students from across Europe for the 5th Annual EUGLOH Student Research Conference. Hosted by the University of Alcalá, this event brought together students from a wide range of disciplines, including science, health, humanities, and engineering, to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and academic exchange. The conference provided a dynamic platform for students from the EUGLOH alliance to present their research, engage in discussions, and build valuable international networks. Throughout the event, attendees participated in poster sessions, oral presentations, and stimulating plenary discussions. The six distinguished guest speakers led plenaries on key topics such as Research Skills, Artificial Intelligence, and Doctoral Education & Time Management, offering essential insights into current academic trends and the future of research.

In addition to the academic content, the conference included team-building sessions, enhancing both personal and professional connections among participants. By promoting collaboration and shared learning, the event created a stimulating academic environment that contributed to both current PhD research and future academic careers.

Participant Testimonials

Víctor Pablo Prado Sánchez, a PhD student at the University of Alcalá, described the event as "an enriching experience that stood out for its international, interdisciplinary and high academic level. He highlighted the opportunity to connect with students from countries such as Portugal, France, Norway, and Germany, which facilitated the exchange of global perspectives on innovative research topics. He also praised the plenary on artificial intelligence, which provided an in-depth look at the field's developments and their global implications. The quality of the activities, which included guided tours, team workshops and interactive sessions, created a dynamic and collaborative environment. This conference not only provided an opportunity to present research, but also to make international connections and reflect on the impact of science on today's global challenges.”

María Ruth Agnoli, a PhD student in Health Sciences at the University of Alcalá, emphasised the personal and academic growth fostered by the conference. "It was more than just a chance to present my PhD project," she said. "It allowed us to immerse ourselves in the history of Alcalá de Henares and its university, and to learn about the importance of teamwork and collaboration." Agnoli also thanked her thesis directors for their support and spoke about her research project, "Oral Health Knowledge in Pregnant Women," being carried out in Burundi.

Stefan Janičić, a PhD student from the University of Novi Sad, reflected on the conference's impact on his academic development: "The three days offered invaluable opportunities to improve my skills in PhD studies and thesis writing," he said. "It was also a great opportunity to meet colleagues from across Europe and exchange ideas. I highly recommend the experience and hope to return again."

According to María Teresa Agulló Baldó, the 5th EUGLOH Annual Student Research Conference was a wonderful opportunity to not just make new acquaintances and friends who are on the same PhD journey as herself, but also to share knowledge from different fields: “Due to its multidisciplinary nature, during the EUGLOH conference we were able to discuss the topics of our dissertations with the rest of attendees by the means of oral and poster presentations, which I enjoyed very much. In addition to this, we were also given a few talks about key aspects which are very present in our day-to-day life as young researchers, such as research skills, artificial intelligence, and teamworking. Finally, alongside the academic activities, the conference also offered guided tours of both the ‘Rectorado’ and the City of Alcalá, both very engaging and of high cultural interest. To conclude, I must say that attending the 5th EUGLOH Annual Research Conference has been a highly rewarding and enriching experience which has allowed me to grow both professionally and as a person.”

The 5th Annual EUGLOH Student Research Conference at the University of Alcalá successfully strengthened academic ties among European universities, fostering an environment of collaboration, learning, and innovation. As the EUGLOH network continues to grow, events like this will remain integral in shaping the future of academic research across Europe.
